Born in 1918 in Aarhus, filmmaker and actor. Gabriel Axel spent the first 18 years of his life in Paris where his father owned a factory. As a bilingual actor, was often casted in roles related to his French background. He returned to Denmark in 1936 where he was trained at the Royal Danish Theatre. He returned to France in 1945 where he toured Parisian theatres. He returned to Denmark yet again in the 1950s where he performed in "Vi som går køkkenvejen". He directed his first film in 1950 entitled "Altid ballade". As an actor he is best known for his performance in "Jeg - en markis" from 1967 and as a director for "Babette's Feast", which earned him an Academy Award in 1987.
