Stefanos Manos was elected M.P. for the first time in 1977 for the NEA DIMOKRATIA party. He has been Minister of Industry and Energy, Minister of  Environment and Public Works as well as Minister of National Economy. He is well known for the establishment of strict environmental regulations for industries, for shutting down the polluting power station at Keratsini, for moving the gas plant away from the centre of Athens, for stopping the creation of new industrial complexes in the Athens area, for initiating strict regulations against noise pollution and he made leasing possible for the first time in Greece by enacting a law in 1981. In February 1998 the NEA DIMOKRATIA expelled him from the Party. In 2004 he was elected as an independent member of the Greek Parliament after running in collaboration with PASOK.
