Dancing Irish Mermaids
The fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen is being produced in Ireland as a modern ballet, entitled "Mermaids".
By ms - H.C. Andersen 2005 - 12 May 2003
The leading Irish dance theater, CoisCéim Dance Theatre, will be premiering a performance based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" in Dublin on May 27 this year.
"Mermaids" is a free interpretation, inspired by the fairy tale. However, the performance sticks to the fundamental themes of the original work - i.e., love, suffering, self-sacrifice and, most of all, the transformations that take place over life's different stages.
The performance has been choreographed by David Bolger, an internatinally-renowned choreographer who was the primary force behind a number of dance performances in Europe, America, Australia and Ireland.
