HCA NEWS Andersen answers Neruda

"H.C. Andersen svarer Neruda" (Hans Christian Andersen answers Neruda) is the title of a book celebrating the Andersen bicentenary to be published in both a Danish and a bilingual Danish-Spanish version in Chile, the home country of Pablo Neruda, and Denmark simultaneously.

By Jakob Steen Olsen - H.C. Andersen 2005 - 05 April 2005

The book is the result of joint collaboration between the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation and the Cultural Affairs Directorate of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Danish publisher is Lindhardt & Ringhof.

The co-editors and Andersen scholars Johannes Møllehave and Karsten Eskildsen juxtapose Chilean Nobel Prize-winner Pablo Neruda's "The Book of Questions" (El Libro de Preguntas) with excerpts of Andersen's writing. The book features a preface by the two Danish editors as well as one by the Chilean author and Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador Isabel Allende.

"A strange and wonderful little collection of poems which despite all odds is nonetheless quite accomplished. Like two pieces of music that transverse time and hemisphere and strike the same cord," critic Kathrine Lilleør at Danish national daily Berlingske Tidendes wrote and rewarded it four stars.

The book (Chilean version) was officially presented at the Andersen award ceremony in Odense during the Fairytale Weekend. It was presented to the Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Chairman of the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation, Mayor of Odense Anker Boye, by the First Lady of Chile, Mrs. Luisa Duran de Lagos.
