HCA NEWS Dutch attraction park celebrates HCA in 2005

For more than half a century, attraction park Efteling has kept watch over the Dutch cultural fairy tale heritage. It would therefore be impossible for the park in Kaatsheuvel to ignore the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the world's most well-known fairy tale authors. The birthday of Hans Christian Andersen will be celebrated at Efteling with many activities.

For many years, visitors have been able to admire scenes from the work of Hans Christian Andersen in the Fairy Tale Forest: 'the Red Shoes', 'the Little Mermaid' and 'the Chinese Nightingale'. This is another reason for Efteling to contribute to the festive international celebration. Even before the Hans Christian Andersen year starts in 2005, Efteling has three noteworthy activities under way: the family musical The Little Mermaid - a co-production with the Flemish Studio 100 - plus a new fairy tale in the Fairy Tale Forest, the Little Match Girl, in addition to the fairy tale writing contest for primary schools in the Netherlands and Flanders: the Efteling Anton Pieck Prize 2005, with Hans Christian Andersen as its theme.

The Little Mermaid musical

Since 17 November, the family musical The Little Mermaid has been staged in the Efteling Theatre.

The two-and-a-half-hour production is based on the well-known tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The audience are swept away to the unfathomable depths of the sea, where the little mermaid lives. The show replaces the successful musical Sleeping Beauty, which was performed in the Efteling Theatre last winter. The musical is a co-production between the Flemish Studio 100 and Efteling. The Efteling Theatre will be the sole location of The Little Mermaid in the Netherlands. The show features well-known Dutch stars such as Kim-Lian van der Meij, Kathleen Aerts, Mariska van Kolck and Joost de Jong. The performance, which will continue at Efteling until the beginning of April 2005, can be seen in combination with an exclusive visit to the Fairy Tale Forest and the attraction PandaVision. During Winter Efteling, it is possible to attend the musical with or without visiting the park.

A new fairy tale in the Fairy Tale Forest
The Little Match Girl On Saturday 11 December.

Winter Efteling will open its gates for the 6th time, with a heart-warming gift for its visitors: the Little Match Girl. This winter's tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen is the 25th fairy tale in the Fairy Tale Forest. It is the story of a girl wandering about the city on a cold New Year's Eve trying to sell matches. Visitors who enter the new fairy tale tableau through the city gate, designed completely in the style of Efteling's artistic mentor Anton Pieck, will see that the scenes fit in perfectly with the nostalgic, romantic atmosphere of Winter Efteling. In a wondrous, enchantingly illuminated park, almost all the attractions will be open and crackling camp fires, the covered Ice Rink and the cross-country ski course will all offer plenty of delightful wintry fun. This year, there will be 3 Warm Winter Evenings, when the park will be open until 11.00 p.m.
