It is the first new translation into English of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales in many years, and according to the translator it is high time. "The Stories of Hans Christian Andersen" widens common perceptions of Hans Christian Andersen to include less familiar traits of his and less familiar stories too.

In the preface to the book, the two translators, Jeffrey Frank and Diana Crone Frank, explore Andersen's frantic and at times bizarre personality in context with literary peers, such as Charles Dickens and Søren Kierkegaard.

The book is fully illustrated with magnificent black-and-white sketches by Vilhelm Pedersen and Lorenz Frolich.

Jeffrey Frank is the senior editor of The New Yorker and was formerly editor and columnist at the Washington Post and Washington Star. He has also published a novel entitled The Columnist.

Diana Crone Frank holds a Ph.D. in linguistics and works for ABC News.
