Last Friday, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award Committee Honorary Award in celebration of Hans Christian Andersen 199th anniversary.

The Queen was awarded for her long-standing commitment to Hans Christian Andersen and received the award with the words:

"It is a great honour to receive the award. I would like to thank the committee for this crazy idea!"

The Italian translator of Danish literature Bruni Berni also received an award for his sublime Italian translations of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales. Likewise, the Brazilian professor Dr. Ana Maria da Costa Santos Menin received an honorary award for her great achievement with her doctorial thesis on the Andersen fairytale 'The Ugly Duckling', which since has been disseminated throughout the Brazilian educational system.

At the traditional awards ceremony at Odense Theatre, Canadian theatre director Robert Lepage received the Odense City Hans Christian Andersen Award of 50,000 EURO which goes towards his coming Hans Christian Andersen rendition in connection with a major theatre production set to premiere in 2005.

Danish Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors
Furthermore, the first five Danish Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors were appointed to great applause when actresses Bodil Udsen, Ghita Nørby, Susse Wold and artist Per Arnoldi went on stage to accept the 24-carat gold Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador needle and a token of the dinner service created by designer Lin Utzon for the design company Rosendahl.

Last February, the dinner service was awarded the world's most prestigious design award, the DESIGN PLUS Award, at the international design fair in Frankfurt.

Lin Utzon was also appointed Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador but was unfortunately unable to attend the ceremony at the Odense Theatre.
