The preparations for the international 2005 celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen are gathering speed, and the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation was proud to present the first major Danish and international projects that are to mark the celebration in Copenhagen last Monday at a press briefing in Copenhagen.

"One can hardly wait. There is no doubt that 2005 will be a fantastic year for Copenhagen and Copenhageners. The bicentenary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen promises an abundance of events, great and small, to the enjoyment of the citizens and our many visitors. Naturally, the city where the storyteller spent most of his adult life and where he created his fairytales will play a central role in the bicentenary celebrations. The substantial contribution by the city of Copenhagen is a natural reflection of this," said Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Jens Kramer Mikkelsen.

In all, 20 projects within theatre, ballet, classical music, film, exhibitions, education and tourism have been sponsored by the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation.
