The Andersen Christmas Market in Lotzes Have

04 December 2004 - 05 December 2004 , Other events
Denmark - Odense

In the run-up to the grand Hans Christian Andersen bicentenary in 2005, a historic Christmas market will be featured in the old quarter of Odense.

Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market
Saturday and Sunday, 4-5 and 11-12 December 2004, from 10.00 to 18.00

In the old precinct near the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Odense a historical Christmas market is to be held that has the writer's own age and - not least - his well-known fairytale figures as its point of departure. Those visiting the market will be able to feel themselves transported back through time to the period when Hans Christian Andersen was made an honorary citizen of Odense (1867). The Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market is to cover the entire city precinct around the museum. The streets and lanes will be a memorable backdrop, with decorations, candles, market stalls and entertainment.

In the gardens of Lotzes Have Christmas trees will be on sale, and Hans Christian Andersen Paraden will be appearing in a winterlike fairytale castle with their special winter performance. You can also meet well-known figures from the author's work, such as 'The Little Match Girl' or 'The Snow Queen' in the streets and lanes of the old precinct. There will be exhibitions and activities at the local museums and attractions where you can buy a one-day family ticket for at reasonable expense.

A visit to Historical Tivoli offers a ride on the roundabout, swing boats, flip-flap and much more besides. On the market square there is a large mirror tent with an old-fashioned interior where refreshments will be served and there will be entertainment - with everything from readings to comic theatre. All sorts of wares will be on sale at the stalls, with shopkeepers in 19th century dress. Everywhere in the precinct you will come across performers, from the hurdy-gurdy man to choirs singing Christmas carols. Child heralds with drummers will announce the day's programme. Go for a ride round the precinct with the hackney coachman and perhaps meet up with a platoon of soldiers in old uniforms marching past and firing a salute of black powder.

The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, the Children's Cultural Centre 'The Tinder-Box' and Citymuseum Møntergården (Bymuseet Møntergården) all offer activities and exhibitions for children and adults. At Citymuseum Møntergården you can visit The Funen Museums' traditional, popular Christmas market where you can buy at the stalls and see exhibitions about the history of celebrating Christmas.

A visit to the Christmas market will be a family event, with a stroll round the picturesque precinct offering museums, children's cultural centre, special events, experiences, entertainment and Christmas shopping.

The Hans Christian Andersen Christmas market will be unique, both nationally and internationally, in having a clear historical concept that uses the writer's fairytale world as its point of departure. In 2005, the Christmas market will take place the two first weekends in December.

The Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Market will take place near the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, Bangs Boder 29, DK-5000 Odense C.
