Hans Christian Andersen's 198th birthday on 2 April will be celebrated over four days in Odense.

Beginning with a festive four-day celebration of Hans Christian Andersen in Odense, there will be a gradual buildup toward the 200-year birthday in 2005, when all the sails will be unfurled in a worldwide celebration. 

As part of the birthday on 2 April, the City of Odense will award its prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Prize of 50,000 Euro to someone who has worked to promote familiarity with the famous Odense writer.
