HERE & NOW World-class Chinese circus fairytale

High-flying acrobats, hundreds of whirling china plates, human pyramids and elastic young girls.

By Oliver Newton - H.C. Andersen 2005 - 25 August 2005

The high-flying rendition of Andersen's 'The Nightingale' performed by the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe was hugely popular at the opening show of the Andersen bicentenary. The show, entitled 'Once Upon A Time', was held on 2 April in Copenhagen.

The troupe can now be experienced in Denmark with the
European premiere of their performance 'A Beautiful Legend', which has been created in celebration of the Andersen bicentenary. The show features some of Andersen's most famous fairytales performed as classical Chinese circus.

The gala premiere of the show marks the beginning of the Aarhus Festival, which as always will be opened by the patron of the festival, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II. Two performances are scheduled for 27 August following which the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe will appear at Ringsted Congress Centre before finishing their tour of Denmark with five performances at MusikTeatret Albertslund.

Andersen acrobatics
The Shenyang acrobats offer their own amazing and wondrous acrobatic rendition of a number of Andersen's famous and less famous fairytales. The talents of the world-famous acrobats and the enchanted world of Hans Christian Andersen combine to present a thrilling, innovative and magical family show. The Chinese acrobats balance in mid-air, fly and dance as they offer their own special interpretation of popular fairytales such as The Little Mermaid, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Little Match Girl, The Nightingale and The Emperor's New Clothes. Sit back and enjoy the show, which is directed by An Nings and features 30 acrobats in a spectacular performance that challenges the senses as well as the laws of gravity with magnificent and  breathtaking choreography.

Performances are sponsored by the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation. The performances in Aarhus are furthermore sponsored by Vilhelm Kiers Foundation and the S.C. Van Foundation. The performances in Ringsted are sponsored by the County of West Zealand. The performances in Albertslund are sponsored by MusikTeatret Albertslund and the County of Copenhagen.
