The Efteling Anton Pieck Prize 2005

In 2005, the Efteling Anton Pieck Prize contest will be held for the fifth time for all primary schools in the Netherlands and Flanders. The Efteling Nature Park Foundation, which introduced the writing competition ten years ago as an accolade to the phenomenal artist and illustrator Anton Pieck, is again offering fairy tale prizes: the 1st prize is ? 10,000, 2nd prize ? 5,000 and 3rd prize ? 2,500. The theme of next year's contest will naturally be Hans Christian Andersen. Unlike the brothers Grimm, for example, who recorded traditional fairy tales, Andersen wrote his fairy tales entirely on his own.

Especially for teachers, Efteling has designed an educational Fairy Tale Guide, which shows the difference between ethnic and cultural fairy tales, offers suggestions for lessons and explains that writers and illustrators can stimulate each other enormously, making their books much more interesting. This year, both writers and illustrators will be set to work in the classrooms. Schools will be invited to write an original fairy tale of their own invention, and illustrated with seven illustrations.

New this year is that schools can win an extra prize from Dutch broadcaster KRO, by recording the process of writing and illustrating on video, in a film lasting precisely one minute. The best films will be shown in the KRO programme Tien Plus!!! and all the films will be available on the KRO Internet site.

The prizes will be awarded on 13 May 2005 at the Efteling Theatre.

With 3.2 million annual visitors, Efteling is Holland's largest fairytale park. In 2005, Efteling will highlight Hans Christian Andersen with several activities.

A musical adaptation of Andersen's "The Little Mermaid", which was staged between 17 November 2004 and April 2005.
Since 11 December 2004 a staging of "The Little Matchgirl" has been featured at the Efteling Fairytale Forest.
And every month, from April to October, a new fairy tale will be featured as theme for a variety of events. In April it was The Ugly Duckling and this month it is the fairy tale Ole Lukoie. At Eftelings hompage you can read more about every fairytale and see a review of the happenings (unfortunately these informations are only available in Dutch).
