Singapore takes regional lead in global celebrations to mark the bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen

On the 14th of April, Singapore will launch the celebration of Hans Christian Andersen (HCA) at Singapore Philatelic Museum. Already from the beginning of the worldwide celebration of HCA, 2 April 2005 events has taken place in Singapore. To celebrate this world-famous fairy-teller more than 30 Singapore organization's have come together to throw HCA a year-long birthday bash in an unprecedented festival, celebrating the joy of reading and writing.

Singapore celebrations
That Singapore will feature prominently in the celebration is obvious as one goes through the impressive lists of events that will take place in the country during the nine months of celebration. Seldom has so many organizations in Singapore worked together to create a festival.

In Singapore the celebration commenced when Singapore Post published a series of commemorative HCA stamps at the end of March 2005. Further Singapore's HCA bicentenary year events, includes a wide range of creative competitions for the children. The famous Danish actress, Susse Wold will perform her incredible one-woman show "It's Perfectly True". Furthermore "The Nightingale" staged by I-Theatre, a nationwide essay competition organized by National Institute of Education, "The Little Mermaid" as a dance performance staged by Singapore Dance Theatre, and a HCA FilmFestival can be enjoyed. Also a wide range of other events like theatre performances, storytelling sessions and exhibitions will take place. The year-long celebration is culminating with the musical "The Snow Queen" staged by SRT's The Little Company at The Esplanade (full list of events below).

Many of the events has been made possible by the support of the HCA 2005 Foundation.

The launch
At the official launch of HCA2005 Singapore on the 14th of April 2005, H. E. Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, and Second Minister for Trade and Industry will grace the event as the Guest-of-Honor. Also the four HCA ambassadors of HCA2005 Singapore, the sponsors and partners of the celebration will be present to mark the beginning of an event-full year of celebration ? a celebration all HCA ambassadors (see below), sponsors and partners can be proud of being responsible for.
