As Honorary Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador to Jordan, Her Majesty Queen Rania will promote both the wider awareness of the life and works of Hans Christian Andersen in Jordan as well as the promotion of the fight against illiteracy represented by the Hans Christian Andersen abc Foundation.

Queen Rania, who is mother of four children, has for several years been committed to the cause of improving the life of children and the youth in Jordan. She is head of the National Council for Family Affairs, which was established to contribute to improving the quality of life of all Jordanian families.

Jordan's King Abdullah and Queen Rania have also launched a nationwide initiative to introduce computers and Information Technology into schools across Jordan to improve the educational system.

On the cultural front, Queen Rania supports numerous causes to promote Jordan's heritage arts and cultural diversity. Furthermore, Her Majesty has produced the children's book "The King's Gift", which is a modern fable published in Arabic and English. The book is a tribute to His Majesty the Late King Hussein bin Talal, on the first anniversary of his passing away. Since 2000, the Queen has joined the United Nation's Children's Fund's Global Leadership Initiative in recognition of her commitment to the cause of children and the youth.

"The bicentenary of Hans Christian Andersen is an important occasion not just for the people of Denmark, but for millions of children and adults around the world, who have treasured his timeless and classic tales. As one of the latter, it gives me great pleasure to accept the invitation to become the Honorary Hans Christian Andersen Ambassador for Jordan.

In addition to the wide-ranging celebrations, I am particularly looking forward to learning more about the HCA-abc Foundation's literacy campaign. By raising awareness of illiteracy and implementing measures with which to combat it, we can empower vulnerable communities around the world. It is my hope that we can work together to find innovative and creative ways to promote literacy throughout the Arab world, and beyond," states Queen Rania.

As a Hans Christian Ambassador, Queen Rania will join a distinguished group of Honorary Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors, which include royalties and heads of states around the world such as The Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, Princess Laurentien of Holland, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and first lady Suzanne Mubarak of Egypt.
