On Saturday 2 April 2005, the Andersen bicentenary will open with a gigantic fairytale show in Copenhagen featuring celebrity entertainers from around the world. Danish and international VIP guests, dignitaries and Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors will swarm the national soccer stadium and will make their red carpet appearance on a specially designed 50-metre red carpet bordered by press stands. Right up to the opening show on 2 April, the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation will keep the press fully updated on which prominent guests are to make their appearance at the Andersen bicentenary opening show.

There will be stardust galore when the red carpet is rolled out at Entrance A5 at the Danish national soccer stadium, Parken, on Saturday 2 April 2005 in the evening. At 9 pm, the official opening show, entitled ONCE UPON A TIME, will mark the opening of the bicentennial celebration of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen. The prominent guests will make their red carpet appearance as they arrive at this grand Andersen gala.

Confirmations are ticking in, and many new names have been added to the guest list:

The Danish government has already confirmed the attendance of Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Minister for Education and Ecclesiastical Affairs Bertel Haarder, Minister for Development Co-operation Ulla Tørnæs, Minister of Justice Lene Espersen, Minister of Cultural Affairs Brian Mikkelsen and Minister of Economic and Business Affairs Bendt Bendtsen. New attendees are Minister for Family and Consumer Affairs Lars Barfoed, Minister of Justice Lene Espersen, and Minister for Nordic Cooperation and the Environment Connie Hedegaard

The Danish Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors who have confirmed their attendance are filmmaker Gabriel Axel, singer Thomas Helmig, model Renée Toft Simonsen and actress Bodil Udsen. Attendees from the other Scandinavian countries are Norwegian entertainers Rolv Wesenlund and Wenche Foss and the Swedish author and dramatist P.O.Engquist. Further attendees include the former President of Iceland Vigdis Finnbogadóttir, the First Lady of Chile Luisa Duràn de Lagos, the Australian athlete and Olympic medallist Cathy Freeman, the Irish politician and Nobel Prize winner John Hume, the French actress Stéphane Audran, Danish actress Susse Wold, Danish actor Jens Okking, Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg, Sir Roger Moore and his wife Kiki, Chilean author Isabel Allende, Dame Antonia Byatt, Chilean soccer legend Ivan Zamorano, Harry Belafonte with his son David and daughter-in-law Malene Belafonte, and Jean Michel Jarre.

Confirmed attendees from the Danish royal family are HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, HRH Prince Henrik, HRH Crown Prince Frederik, HRH Crown Princess Mary, HRH Prince Joachim, HRH Princess Alexandra, HRH Princess Benedikte, HH Prince Richard, HH Princess Alexandra and Count Jefferson von Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth. The following foreign royal dignitaries have announced their attendance: HRH Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, HRH Princess Laurentien of The Netherlands, HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, and HRH Prince Bhisastej Rajani of Thailand.

Cast
Once Upon A Time is a 120-minute show that relates the life and work of Hans Christian Andersen in music, dance and film. For the occasion, Parken will be transformed into an enchanting fairytale universe where a number of newly produced short films will relate the story of Andersen's life. Each fairytale will be conveyed in dance and music. Audiences at home and at the stadium will experience Connie Nielsen as hostess, Jean Michel Jarre, the world-famous American opera singer Renee Flemming, Safri Duo, the Italian quick-change artist Ennio Marchetto, Sir Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte and Isabel Allende. The cast of 600 performers including a children's choir of 350 boys and girls, 28 ballet children from the Royal Danish Ballet, the Chinese acrobatics troupe, the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe, and a large ensemble of dancers and singers.
