HCA NEWS HCA bicentenary launched in Estonia

The Estonian contribution to the worldwide celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen was presented at a press launch on 30 November 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Royal Danish Embassy in Tallinn, hosted by the Danish ambassador to Estonia, Jørgen Munk Rasmussen.

A broad range of Hans Christian Andersen 2005 projects were announced at the press launch in Estonia, including exhibitions, television programmes, competitions, and theatre performances. The press launch was co-hosted by the Royal Danish Embassy and the Danish Cultural Institute in Tallinn in association with the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation and Have PR.
 
At the press launch ambassador Jørgen Munk Rasmussen appointed two famous Estonian personalities as Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors: Mr. Eri Klas, the internationally renowned conductor and the world-class skisport star Kristiina Smigun. Since Kristiina Smigun was attending skisport competitions abroad, her manager Kristjan T. Vähi accepted the appointment on her behalf. Kristiina Smigun extended her gratitude in a videotaped message.
 
Both Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors will contribute to the wider awareness and appreciation of Hans Christian Andersen in Estonia. Furthermore, the two Ambassadors will represent the HCA-abc Foundation, which is a humanitarian foundation created in the name of Hans Christian Andersen to address illiteracy worldwide.
 
Members of the HCA2005 Committee for Estonia took part in the press launch. The Committee consists of public figures from Estonian cultural, media, governmental and political circles who have all contributed to the Hans Christian Andersen projects in Estonia with enthusiasm and dedication.

A list of scheduled Hans Christian Andersen 2005 activities in Estonia and short profiles of the two Estonian Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors are enclosed.

Danish-produced 27-episode animated sequel on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales is currently being broadcasted on Estonian national television (ETV). The series will be re-run during the spring of 2005.

Special insert in the Estonian daily newspaper Eesti Päevaleht devoted to Hans Christian Andersen and his homeland.

The newspaper insert will contain 8 pages with feature articles on Hans Christian Andersen and his importance for Denmark and the Danes, interviews with key figures in the celebration of the Hans Christian Andersen bicentennial, and reports on places and themes related to Hans Christian Andersen and his life.

Ice Sculpture City: The Snow Queen.

Inspired by the fairytale The Snow Queen students from Estonian high schools and members of the Falck Klub will be invited to build an ice city for children to play in at a central location in Tallinn. The event is part of Tallinn Old City's winter program for children.

Literary Quiz: Hans Christian Andersen and his fairytale land.

A literary quiz will be launched to allow children, aged 9-13, in Tallinn to compete on their knowledge on Hans Christian Andersen. The quiz questionaire will be available from Tallinn Central Library. A winner will be announced each month until March 2005. On the day of the announcement of the final winners, a costume ball will be held at one of the Tallinn schools.

Dolls competition and exhibition.

Until February 2005, Estonian children will create dolls representing characters from Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales. The winners will be announced on the opening on 2 April 2005 of an exhibition of the dolls created.

The winning contributions are to be exhibited at various venues in Estonia and presented  to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum in Odense, Denmark.

Amateur Film Competition - The Emperor's New Clothes.

Independent film groups and amateur film studios will make short films inspired by the fairytale The Emperor's New Clothes. The competition will be subdivided into age categories. Focus will be on the interpretation of the value and moral issues represented in the fairytale.

The best films will be presented on amateur film festivals in Estonia in 2005.

Theatre play based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling.

Hans Christian Andersen fairytale room.

The Estonian Puppet Theatre will decorate a special room at the theatre dedicated to readings of Hans Christian. Andersen's fairytales. The decorations of the room will reflect the theme of the fairytale being read. The concept will be transferred to schools, kindergartens etc.

Live theatre performance of Hans Christian Andersen's life: Picture book without picture.

The Estonian theatre group TEATER VARIUS has created a stage version of Hans Christian Andersen's life based on various books and movies about the writer. The multimedia performance will feature music, text, dance and video projections and will present Hans Christian Andersen in a broader view. The main target audience is children from 12-18 years and adults familiar with the writer's works. The theatre group will tour with the play throughout Estonia in youth clubs and theatres. The tour is expected to start in May and last until December 2005.

Black Nights Film Festival: special programme on Hans Christian Andersen.

The Black Nights Film Festival 2005 will feature a special Hans Christian Andersen programme with several films about the writer. The main target group is children of all ages.

Conference HCA2005.

The conference will focus on several aspects of Hans Christian Andersen's life, works and influence. Teachers, literary historians, literary critics, students and psychologists are expected to participate, including Helene Højrup, Danish Centre for Children's Literature, who is expected to speak about analyses and assessments of the importance of Andersen's writing for children in the 19th century in the light of children's literary studies today.

Distribution of booklet with the fairytale The Elf Hill to all 4th grade school children in Estonia.

A booklet with an Estonian translation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Elf Hill will be distributed to all 4th grade school children in Estonian schools. The booklet will be illustrated by a well-known Estonian illustrator, Tiina Reinsalu. Prior to the presentation of the booklet schools will conduct various activities related to Hans Christian Andersen (discussions, lectures, film and video presentations, theatre performances etc.).

Exhibition of Hans Christian Andersen books in local libraries.

In cooperation with local libraries and schools in towns and villages exhibitions of Hans Christian Andersen's books will be arranged in local libraries. Additional events for children in the local communities are being planned as well. Opening of the exhibitions will take place in March-April 2005.

Exhibition of books and illustrations of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales.

The National Library of Estonia has a considerable collection of original illustrations of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales. The illustrations will be exhibited in the library in 2005 together with a number of new illustrations under preparation.

Touring exhibition: Hans Christian Andersen - Life and Art.

The international exhibition, Hans Christian Andersen - Life and Art, with 20 display boards that illustrate the life and career of the writer by means of texts and images will be exhibited at selected venues across Estonia. The exhibition follows the writer from his birth in Odense in 1805 through his life in Denmark and Europe to his death in Copenhagen in 1875.

Presentation of Estonian translation of Hans Christian Andersen's novel Lykke-Peer.

A translation of Hans Christian Andersen's novel Lykke-Peer, translated by the Estonian author Anu Saluäär. The book will be published in April 2005 by Loomingu Raamatukogu.

Postcard week.

A special postcard with a drawing by Raivo Järvi will be issued by Eesti Post (Estonian National Postal Service). Children will be asked to finish the drawing and to write the title of their favourite fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen on the postcard and then mail the card to family or friends with their own message. No postage fee will be charged for sending the cards and a special postal seal, HCA2005 Eesti, will be put on the cards.

The two Estonian Hans Christian Andersen Ambassadors:

Eri Klas:
Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of  the Tampere Philharmonic in Finland and the Tallinn Philharmonic in Estonia. Born on 28 June 1939 in Tallinn, Eri Klas began his conducting studies at the Tallinn Conservatory and upon graduation went to St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) to work with Nikolai Rabinovich. He made his debut at the Estonian National Theatre in Tallinn in 1964. He was named Music Director in 1975 of the Estonian National Theatre and has since become conductor laureate. Between 1985 and 1990, he was Music Director of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. From 1991-1996 he was principal conductor of Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Denmark.
 
Kristiina Smigun:
Winner of several medals in cross-country skiing, World Championships and World Cups. Born on 23 February 1977 in Tartu, Estonia. She has also won several national championships and world championships as a junior skier. In the World Cup of 2003/2004 she placed 4th among the best skiers of the world.
