HCA NEWS Essay Competition about Hans Christian Andersen

The Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation and the Danish Institute for Upper Secondary Education (DIG) has arranged an international essay competition for students at the upper secondary level.

The Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation and the Danish Institute for Upper Secondary Education (DIG) has arranged an international essay competition for students at the upper secondary level.

Prizes
Students can participate in four categories. Each category will be awarded with a first prize of DKK 10,000 and a second prize of DKK 5,000.

Categories
1. An essay in Danish containing an analysis and an interpretation of one or more Hans Christian Andersen texts
2. A fictitious or journalistic text
3. A multi media presentation
4. An essay in English

What Is the Subject?
The student can choose among the following subjects within each category
1. Hans Christian Andersen as a Traveller
2. Hans Christian Andersen across the Barricades
3. Hans Christian Andersen - for Children or Adults?
4. "The Silly Imagination".

In What Form Can the Essay Be Submitted?
Essays in categories 1 and 2 should be submitted in Danish in electronic form (floppy disc or CD-Rom in Word format) together with four paper copies, either printed from a computer or type-written.

Essays in categories 3 and 4 may make use of various forms of multi media presentations and should be submitted in electronic form in four copies (floppy disc or CD-Rom in a format that can be played in Windows Media Player or a similar programme).

Essays in category 4 should be submitted in English in electronic form (floppy disc or CD-Rom in Word format) together with four paper copies, either printed from a computer or type-written.

How Long Can the Essay Be?
Text essays should be no longer than ten pages of 2,400 characters per page including spaces.
Entries in category 3 must have a playing time of not more than 10 minutes.

Who Can Join?
The student must be at least fifteen years old but not older than twenty and be in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade. The school that the student attends must submit a statement confirming that the requirements are complied with. The statement should contain information about the student's name, address, birthday, school and class.

How to Hand the Entry in?
Entries must be submitted not later than October 18, 2004 (week 43) to:

Anyone submitting an essay gives the Hans Christian Andersen 2005 Foundation and DIG the right to publish the essay in print without having to pay copyright expenses. The winners will be announced in the press and on HCA2005.com in week 49 at the latest.
