At the same time the whole world celebrates Hans Christian Andersen?s 200th birthday on 2 April 2005 with one of the biggest cultural events ever, the citizens of the Municipality of Odense will be celebrating the dedication of their newly-renovated city hall.

The city hall will be freshened up with new colors and lighting, so that it will not seem so dark and depressing, as has been contended, writes the newspaper Fynens Stiftstidende.

It is the hallways, meeting rooms, assembly hall and foyer that are in particular need of a caring hand. At the same time, the city hall will use the opportunity to install more up-to-date facilities for these locales, which will make it easier to hold exhibits, meetings and concerts.  In addition, most of the city hall?s floors will be polished and all the signs replaced.

However, the city hall?s most famous work of art, "Fynsk Forår" (?Funen Spring?), will not be touched.

The renovation will cost DKK 8.5 million and the work, which has just commenced, is expected to last about a year.
