During the weekend of 15 - 17 August, the University of Southern Denmark, will host an international symposium focusing on Hans Christian Andersen and modern literary theory.

Even today, Andersen's epoch-making fairytales, his narrative technique and unique irony post great challenges to researchers and will be the subject of discussion at the weekend symposium that hosts international speakers from universities in Denmark, the Nordic countries and Germany.

The H.C. Andersen 2005 foundation sponsors the symposium as part of the run-up to the 2005 bicentennial of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen.

Hans Christian Andersen's unique fairytale genre, the art fairytale, has influenced other narrative genres - novels, short stories as well as film, commercials, reporting and computer games.

The organisers intend the symposium not only to contribute to research but also to result in communication projects that involve public institutions and private businesses currently holding great interest in narrative theory in relation to the communication of products and concepts.

The symposium is organised by a group of researchers at the University of Southern Denmark headed by Ph.D. Krog Hansen.

The symposium will be held in English, and all speeches will be publicised in a publication by Syddansk Universitetsforlag, the Southern Danish University Press.
