Better Hans Christian Andersen than Harry Potter. Better Hamlet than Peter Høeg. For the American professor Harold Bloom, books are friends and he chooses his friends with care. According to the controversial literary critic, at least 35 million other readers are not nearly as good at choosing.

Harold Bloom explains here why reading is not supposed to be easy. Rather, it should challenge readers to enter into a dialogue with themselves.  For Harold Bloom, literature is about seeking yourself in the literature that is the eternal source of human wisdom.
