Hans Christian Andersen medal possibly on the way In connection with Hans Christian Andersen's 200th birthday, the Danish Minister of Economic and Business Affairs Bendt Bendtsen is considering creating a special Hans Christian Andersen medal. Andersen 2005 - 05 March 2003 A special Hans Christian Andersen medal may be the result of a proposal by Danish numismatists to create a Hans Christian Andersen gold coin in connection with the writer's 200th birthday in 2005. Such a gold coin would be contrary to the Danish tradition of depicting only the sovereign or high-ranking members of the royal family on coins. Something not even Hans Christian Andersen can compete with. However, the Danish National Bank believes that a medal in honor of Hans Christian Andersen may be a possibility as an alternative to the gold coin. This would avoid a breach with Danish minting tradition and, therefore, according to several Danish media sources, Minister of Economic and Business Affairs Bendt Bendtsen believes that such a medal should be considered.
