PelÚ. 62-year-old PelÚ finished his career more than 25 years ago but more than ever his name lives on. Hescored 1281 goals in 1363 matches. He started his career in 1956 playing for Santos in Sao Paulo where he stayed until 1974. In this period, he helped the club secure a number of titles, but hebecame an international name as early as 1958 when he dribbled his way to securing the world championship for Brazil during the World Cup in Sweden. He repeated this test piece twice - in 1962 and 1970.
His career ended in Cosmos in New York in 1977 after securing the championship, of course. In 1978, PelÚ received the International Peace Award, and in 1993, he was admitted to the USNational Soccer Hall of Fame. He has been voted "Athlete of the Century" three times - in 1980 and twice in 1999.
