The play is set in one of the numerous manors which Hans Christian Andersen would frequent. Here great personalities of the time sojourn to discuss the concept of the Golden Age. Hans Christian Andersen instigates and creates the setting for this meeting.

While preparing the event, Andersen is haunted by characters from his fairytales who enter dialogue with him and with each other - a kind of Midsummer Night's Dream - an imaginative comedy of mistaken identity.
